singapore elections are over and PAP won again! well sure. ok duh .. but it seems their popularity is dropping! most of their seats were won with really narrow margins, and even lee hsien loong's constituency wasn't a walkover or landslide victory.

personally i don't think singapore is ready for such a drastic change in government yet. maybe in time the opposition parties will have the chance to show what they're really made of, but at the moment, i don't think singaporeans are prepared to take a leap of faith. things are too secure! and can any of the opposition parties afford "progress packages"? i don't think singapore wants to go the same way as the philippines or indonesia have with some of ex-leaders. you don't want some wildly popular dude who used to be an action hero, or a not-so-cute old man who can't see or hear and falls asleep in parliament, because that would just be completely useless.

so anyway, it's good that people are starting to take risks with who they vote for and all that. maybe one day there will be a sea change and things will get really exciting in sg. i will make sure to get a CPF account the next time i do work experience so i get my progress package. i'm a low-income earner living in a 3-room flat (albeit in marine parade). i wonder how big my angpow will be =) but for now, let's just watch the PAP shit their pants in preparation for the next election!! i'd love to see how that goes.

Hi,

just to correct a misconception, the progress package was given by the government, not the PAP (who runs the government.) Its a small but critical difference.

Your point that the opposition cannot afford progress package presumes that they will run budget deficits throughout their stay in power if they came to power.

Singapore is starting to wake up from its anesthetic. Keep it up.
